Redesigning how users engage and interact with a blogging website to read and write content

My role: UI/UX Designer

Problem Statement

The blogging website has low user engagement , low interaction rate on posts and limited repeat visits.

But how can we create an engaging experience and foster ineraction ?

User research

User research revealed various insights such as decrease in average user session duration and decrease in user interaction.

User interviews

User interviews helped in identifying issues such as getting distracted from reading blogs while navigating and scrolling through the comments section and bookmarked list of blogs often being abandoned and forgotten.

Competitive Analysis

Examining of various blogging websites - competitors led to understanding some important key success factors which included:


• Smooth and easy discovery of content

• Enhanced social features

Design intent

Our primary goal is to enhance user engagement and interaction while also following existing brand guidelines.

How ?

  1. How might we make the user interface intuitive and controllable for the users ?

  2. How might we enhance content discovery ?

  3. How might we engage users and improve interaction ?

Challenges

There were technical , time and budget constraints some of which are mentioned below:


  1. Incorporating notifications as reminder to read saved blogs especially in mobile app had technical and budget constraints for development.

  2. Personalization of the mobile app required more time and budget and hence moved to the next phase of development.


Feedback & Iterations

Many users felt note-taking feature was not required for blogs as compared to books. Based on feedback this feature was removed for users to have a hassle free reading experience.

Key features implemented

Some of the user-centric features designed are as follows :


  1. Comments Section Redesign: Simplified UI with filter options for improved usability.


  2. Introduced Your reading list section along with recommendations thereby reminding while also encouraging users to read the blogs they have already bookmarked.


  3. Improved market penetration and user engagement through Line Sharing to social media feature where users can select the lines or wordings they like and share it with ease across social media platforms through a single click action.


  4. User retention was increased by adding By the same author section.


  5. Reminder notifications were designed for mobile app to improve user engagement.

Key performance indicators

The new redesigned interface increased user engagement in the comments section of the website by 4%.

Learnings

Most important takeaways are


  1. Usability testing showed unexpectedly high engagement with a filter in the comments section we almost omitted from the design.

  2. Early feedback from developers prevented potential technical hurdles later in the design process.
